It can be amusing. Or frustrating. Or downright ugly. We're talking about a "failure to communicate." See if you recognize any of these scenarios:
- You ask your partner to start dinner for you because you're running late. But he/she has so many questions ("where's this ingredient?" "how much should I make?") that you end up making dinner yourself (albeit tiredly and angrily)
- You listen to a co-worker talk incessantly about a personal matter that you sympathized with two hours ago and yet she continues rambling on and on.
- You try to talk to your child about something important and she refuses to take her eyes off the TV ("What? I am listening!")
Makes you want to scream or throw something heavy, doesn't it?
What you've most likely realized is that speaking the same mother tongue to others doesn't necessarily mean that you're speaking the same language! True communication occurs when your message and intent are understood by someone else.
What often happens is that many of us are so concerned with WHAT we are saying (Content), that we forget HOW we communicate (Style).
Now here's an interesting fact: more than 70% of all conflicts, arguments and miscommunication are a result of people communicating in different styles - and not knowing it.
So - when you communicate with people using their communication style, they'll not only understand what you're saying - the first time - but you'll improve your ability to work with them, motivate them, and fulfill your (and their) potential. (Pretty powerful stuff.)
