Complete Your Relationships Before It's Too Late

By Nisandeh Neta

My old teacher, Frank Natale, called two weeks ago from Hawaii to tell me, that after two years of pain resulting from terminal illness, he had decided to disconnect from his life support machinery and in this way allow death to come naturally.

We have had a few long talks since that initial phone call, sharing about our relationship, our contributions to each other's lives, our hurts and disappointments as well as our appreciations, acknowledgements and love for each other.
I've never felt so close to him in all the years we were together. I never realized how much love we had for each other.

Death was never so close to me before, so tangible...

Death is an issue that we constantly deny in our youth worshipping society.
We don't like to talk about it nor do we wish to contemplate it.
Yet, death is as intrinsic a part of life as is birth.
In actuality, death is not the opposite of life. It is the opposite of birth. Life continues in a circle of birth and death, time after time.

Like the seasons of the year: the birth of nature in spring, the ripening process in summer, the maturation and growth in autumn and ultimately, the decaying and dying in winter, where the cycle completes itself and begins anew.
As day is followed by night, only to be followed by day again...

We all know of this process, and yet, if not personally confronted, we would prefer to ignore it, especially when we're still young and healthy.

I guess I'm no exception.

Until such time as when the reality of death strikes us in the face...

Which was exactly what happened two weeks ago, beginning with Frank's phone call.

Frank Natale passed away a few days ago, conscious, content and looking forward for the new adventure called death.

Observing myself in these last days, I could only say, "thank you, thank you, thank you". My sense of gratefulness was overwhelming. What would have happened if he had passed away, without this opportunity to complete our relationship?
Without the chance to say, "goodbye", without being able to say, "I love you"?

25 years ago, Frank created the most powerful training I lead - the One Experience.
One of the special elements in this transformational training is that the participants get the opportunity to look at their own death as well as the death of their loved ones, in order to encourage them to complete their relationships before it's too late.

Not everyone has the chance that I had, having a few weeks' notice of impending death as many deaths occur suddenly, mostly without warning. An accident, a heart attack, a stroke.

And yet, although I have been through these powerful processes time and time again, I was reminded once again through life, of the importance and urgency in completing my relationships...

How are your relationships at the moment?

When you consider the possibility of your own death or the death of a loved one, is there any unfinished 'business' left to work out in any of your relationships? Are there any unfinished feelings to experience with anyone? What would you say to a loved one who is dying?

Take some time to sit in a place where you will not be disturbed and allow yourself to consider the death of your mother, father, brother, sister, son, daughter, wife, husband, friend, teacher, colleague or anyone else who is important for you.

Take a look at what is not complete in these relationships, and make the commitment to complete them now, before your own death or theirs.

Make sure you make your life more meaningful before you die.

Do it now, because you too, are going to die, and you may not have the time or the energy to do that when your time comes.

Remember, when your time comes and you're on your death bed, you're probably not going to regret not having spent more time in the office, but you will regret that you didn't tell your loved ones in time, "goodbye" and that you loved them.

Just pick up the phone... before it's too late...
